Department of Economics
अर्थशास्त्र विभाग
Rigorous training in economic theory, quantitative methods and the Indian economy under the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework of the University of Delhi, taught by a large and experienced faculty.
About the Department
Economics is a study of how social choices are made in the production and distribution of goods required for satisfying our material needs. The focus of the discipline and the course is on giving the students the tools required for rigorous and abstract analysis, which forms the mainstay of modern theoretical economics. After pursuing this Honours programme, the students will be well equipped to enter a postgraduate programme in any Indian university or a university outside India.
An Honours degree in Economics also gives a good grounding for entering the civil services, banking and financial services sector, or the corporate sector. It is an intellectually demanding course and is most sought after at Delhi University. The faculty of the Department of Economics consists of highly qualified and experienced teachers.

Principal’s Desk
P.G.D.A.V. College was established in 1957 to address the challenges of higher education in the newly burgeoning nation. One of the oldest colleges of the University of Delhi, P.G.D.A.V. is an integral part of the rich heritage of the Dayanand Anglo Vedic movement—a pioneering social reform movement since the 19th century. The great saint and the founder of Arya Samaj Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati’s vision for modern global education within the Indian milieu is an inspiring gospel for our mission at P.G.D.A.V.
In ‘Satyarth Prakash’, Maharshi propounds that Shiksha (education) helps one acquire knowledge, culture, righteousness, self-control and virtues, and also eradicates ignorance and evil habits. Scientific temperament, rationality, universal education, and women’s education constituted the core principles of Arya Samaj. P.G.D.A.V. College offers a combination of Shiksha and Samskara—modern education rooted in Indian values for nation-building and the welfare of society.
The College is proud of its highly qualified teaching and supporting staff. We offer thirteen exciting undergraduate and four postgraduate courses across twelve disciplines. There are both the Honours and Programme degrees at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Our resolve towards inclusive education and a better society has grown stronger since the pandemic; we engage more creatively with our students through online and offline pedagogical resources.
Our College offers state-of-the-art infrastructure, one of the best library facilities, and affable supporting staff. The College comprises smart classrooms, an auditorium, conference halls, well-equipped labs, and international standard sports facilities. We have avowed for ‘Sarvangin Vikas’, the overall development of our wards at P.G.D.A.V. Co-curricular and cultural activities are integral to learning at P.G.D.A.V. along with rigorous academic training.
We have an enabling environment, training facilities and guidance for nurturing and grooming students in sports, fine arts, music, dance, theatre and many other skills. Our wards achieve accolades on national and international platforms. P.G.D.A.V. is the proud alma mater of many international sports persons and artists of world repute.
Our commitment to inclusive education grows from strength to strength. We facilitate a conducive learning environment for our differently-abled students by offering friendly infrastructure and forthcoming staff. A thriving Enabling Cell helps make the college a more sensitive space for differently abled students.
Several scholarships are available for helping and encouraging young learners. Recently, a student fund was created to financially aid students adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. P.G.D.A.V. sensitizes students towards mother nature and takes pride in sustainable practices for enhancing green cover and reducing carbon footprints.
‘Vishwa Kalyan’, global welfare and ‘Rashtra Nirman’, nation building through value-based scientific education, our guiding force at P.G.D.A.V. We warmly welcome new members of the P.G.D.A.V. family for an enriching learning experience and an association for life.
Asato Ma Sadgamaya! From untruth to the truth! (Brhadarayanka Upanishad).
